Toronto to Halifax: What the Route Looks Like
An Ontario to Halifax move covers roughly 1,800 km of highway. The truck leaves our base at 205 Geary Ave in Toronto, follows Highway 401 east past Kingston, crosses into Quebec on Autoroute 20 past Montreal and Quebec City, picks up the Trans-Canada through Rivière-du-Loup and Edmundston, runs the length of New Brunswick past Fredericton and Moncton, and enters Nova Scotia at Amherst before Highways 104 and 102 bring it into Halifax.
That is four provinces and long stretches of two-lane highway once you leave Quebec, which is why a Halifax delivery is planned as a date range rather than a single day. Halifax also runs on Atlantic Time, one hour ahead of Toronto, so set your delivery call window with that in mind.

Timing and Seasons on the Halifax Route
Halifax has a maritime climate, and it changes how a long-distance move should be planned. Winters are not as cold as Toronto’s on the thermometer, but they are wetter: heavy wet snow, freezing rain and the occasional nor’easter that closes the Trans-Canada in New Brunswick for a day. Between December and March, leave extra slack in your delivery window and do not book your first night in the new place on the earliest possible date.
The peninsula’s older streets are narrow and lined with on-street parking. After a storm, a snowbank can take the spot the truck needed, so a winter delivery to the peninsula or downtown Dartmouth works best with a neighbour or the building warned in advance.
Summer and early fall are the busiest months on this route. Halifax also has a strong September 1 rental turnover driven by Dalhousie, Saint Mary’s and Mount Saint Vincent, so late-August pickup dates in Ontario fill first. If you are moving for a September start, book the Ontario pickup as early as you can.
Fog and coastal humidity are the other Halifax-specific detail. Cardboard softens, fabric picks up damp and untreated wood swells. Use plastic bins for books and documents, keep mattresses in covers until they are in the bedroom, and let solid wood furniture sit for a day or two before tightening anything.

Arriving in Halifax: What Is Different When the Truck Gets There
Halifax Regional Municipality is bigger than the name suggests. It takes in the Halifax peninsula, Dartmouth across the harbour, Bedford, Lower Sackville, Clayton Park, Spryfield and the suburbs out to Cole Harbour and Timberlea. Where exactly you are landing changes the delivery plan.
- Peninsula and north end houses are often older homes split into flats, with narrow staircases and tight turns. Send us a photo of the stairwell and the front approach when you book so the crew knows what fits and what needs to come apart.
- Dartmouth deliveries mean a harbour crossing. Large trucks generally use the MacKay Bridge rather than the Macdonald, which adds a little time from the peninsula side.
- Condos and apartments in Halifax work the way they do in Toronto: the service elevator has to be booked, and many buildings ask for a certificate of insurance before moving day. Give us the property manager’s contact and we will handle the paperwork.
- Parking on the narrowest streets can be the hard part. Ask the municipality about a temporary no-parking permit for delivery day if your street has no room for a full-size truck.
What Changes When You Move from Ontario to Nova Scotia
An interprovincial move has no customs or inspections, but a few things do change when you cross into Nova Scotia. None of them are hard. They are just easy to forget while you are unpacking.
- Driver’s licence: exchange your Ontario licence for a Nova Scotia one within 90 days of arriving.
- Your vehicle: register it in Nova Scotia and arrange Nova Scotia insurance. An Ontario policy does not simply carry over.
- Health coverage: apply for Nova Scotia’s MSI as soon as you arrive. Coverage starts on the first day of the third month after the month you move. OHIP continues for the rest of the month you leave plus two more months, so the two line up if you apply promptly.
- Taxes: the province you live in on December 31 is the one you file provincial tax for that year, and the HST rate in Nova Scotia is different from Ontario’s, so a move late in the year is worth a word with your accountant.
- Mail and records: set up Canada Post mail forwarding before pickup day, and update the CRA, your bank and your employer with the Halifax address.

No. A move from Ontario to Nova Scotia is a domestic move with no customs. The things that do change are your driver’s licence, vehicle registration and health coverage, which are covered in the section above.
Do you supply a certificate of insurance for a Halifax condo?
Yes. If your building’s property manager asks for one before the elevator can be booked, send us their contact details and we will provide it ahead of delivery day.
