Toronto to Calgary: What the Route Looks Like
An Ontario to Calgary move covers roughly 3,400 km. The truck leaves our base at 205 Geary Ave in Toronto and follows Highway 17 across northern Ontario through Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay and Kenora, then the Trans-Canada across Manitoba and Saskatchewan through Winnipeg, Regina and Medicine Hat before it reaches Calgary. The northern Ontario section is the slowest part of the trip: long two-lane stretches, few towns and wildlife on the road at dusk.
Calgary is on Mountain Time, two hours behind Toronto, and sits at about 1,045 metres above sea level in dry Prairie air. Both of those shape the details further down this page.

Timing and Seasons on the Calgary Route
Calgary’s weather is drier and more changeable than Toronto’s. Snow is possible from October through May, and winter cold is a dry cold. The city’s signature is the chinook: a warm wind off the Rockies that can lift the temperature by 15 to 20 degrees in a few hours, turning packed snow to slush and then to ice overnight. A winter delivery to a driveway or a back lane goes better with salt or sand on hand and the walkway cleared before the truck arrives.
Across Saskatchewan and southern Alberta the Trans-Canada is exposed to strong Prairie crosswinds, which slow a high-sided truck. In winter, leave extra slack in your delivery window for the Prairie and northern Ontario sections rather than the city itself.
Summer brings its own two things to plan around. Calgary sits in Canada’s hail belt, and June to August thunderstorms can drop hail with little warning, so an unloading crew works in short bursts on a stormy afternoon. The Calgary Stampede fills ten days in early July, and the downtown core and the Beltline are congested for the duration; a delivery to a downtown condo is easier the week before or the week after.
The dry air is the detail people from Ontario notice last. Solid wood furniture, pianos and guitars can shrink and crack over the first winter. A humidifier in the main living space is the usual fix, and letting furniture sit a few days before tightening anything helps.

At the delivery end
Arriving in Calgary: What Is Different When the Truck Gets There
Calgary addresses come with a quadrant: NW, NE, SW or SE. The same street name and number can exist in more than one quadrant, so the quadrant on your delivery address is not optional. Check it twice when you book.
- Inner-city neighbourhoods such as Inglewood, Bridgeland, Kensington and Marda Loop are built on rear lanes with detached garages. The easiest unloading is often from the lane, not the street. Tell us which side has the wide door.
- Newer suburbs in the far north, the deep south and the east have front garages and narrow streets. A full-size truck can usually park at the curb, but tight cul-de-sacs are worth a mention when you book.
- Downtown and Beltline high-rises work the way Toronto condos do: the elevator has to be booked and many buildings want a certificate of insurance first. Send us the property manager’s contact and we will handle it.
- Getting around the city: Deerfoot Trail and the Stoney Trail ring road are the main truck routes, which is why a delivery on the far side of the city from the Trans-Canada takes longer than the map distance suggests.
What Changes When You Move from Ontario to Alberta
An interprovincial move has no customs or inspections, but Alberta does a few things differently from Ontario, and the deadlines start on the day you arrive.
- Driver’s licence: exchange your Ontario licence for an Alberta licence within 90 days of moving.
- Your vehicle: register it in Alberta within 90 days, through a registry agent, and arrange Alberta insurance. An Ontario policy does not carry over.
- Health coverage: apply for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan within three months of arriving. OHIP continues for the rest of the month you leave plus two more months, which covers the transition if you apply promptly.
- Taxes: Alberta has no provincial sales tax, only GST, and the province you live in on December 31 is the one you file provincial income tax for that year.
- Mail and records: set up Canada Post mail forwarding before pickup day and update the CRA, your bank and your employer with the Calgary address, quadrant included.

What if my Calgary place is not ready when I have to leave Ontario?
Possession dates rarely line up across provinces. Storage in transit holds your shipment between pickup and delivery so there is still one load and one delivery. Tell us both dates when you book and we will quote the gap.
Can you deliver elsewhere in Alberta?
Yes. Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks, Red Deer, Edmonton and the rest of the province are quoted the same way, on the actual pickup and delivery addresses.
Is there customs or an inspection when moving between provinces?
No. A move from Ontario to Alberta is a domestic move with no customs. What changes is your driver’s licence, vehicle registration and health coverage, covered in the section above.
