Toronto to Vancouver: The Longest Route We Run
An Ontario to Vancouver move is close to 4,400 km of highway, the longest route Move It Right runs. The truck leaves our base at 205 Geary Ave in Toronto and follows Highway 17 across northern Ontario through Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay and Kenora, then the Trans-Canada across Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Past Calgary it climbs into the Rockies over Kicking Horse Pass at the British Columbia border, crosses Rogers Pass and Revelstoke, drops to Kamloops and takes the Coquihalla down to Hope and the Lower Mainland.
That is five provinces and three time zones. Vancouver is three hours behind Toronto, which matters when you are arranging a delivery call from the other end of the country, and the mountain section is the part that decides the delivery window in winter.

Timing and Seasons on the Vancouver Route
Two very different climates sit on this route. The mountain passes between Alberta and the Lower Mainland get real winter: British Columbia requires winter tires on most of its mountain highways from October 1 to April 30, including the Coquihalla and Rogers Pass, and those passes close for avalanche control after heavy snowfall. From late fall to early spring, expect the delivery window to carry extra slack for the mountain section, and do not tie your first night in Vancouver to the earliest date in the range.
Vancouver itself rarely sees heavy snow. What it has is rain, most of it between October and March. Rain changes how a delivery is handled: cardboard weakens, fabric and mattresses need to stay covered until they are inside, and strata buildings often require floor protection in the lobby and hallways on wet days. Plastic bins for books and documents are worth the small extra cost on this route.
Summer is the driest and the busiest season. Pickup dates in Ontario between late June and the end of August fill first, so if you are targeting a summer arrival, book the Ontario end early and let the delivery window follow.
Coming off the Prairies, the truck has also spent a day in dry air before it reaches the coast. Solid wood furniture should sit for a couple of days at the new place before you tighten joints or judge a drawer that suddenly sticks.

Arriving in Vancouver: What Is Different When the Truck Gets There
Metro Vancouver is a cluster of separate cities: Vancouver proper, Burnaby, Richmond, Surrey, Coquitlam, New Westminster and the North Shore. The delivery plan depends on which one you are landing in and what kind of building it is.
- Strata condos and apartments are the most common Vancouver delivery. The elevator must be booked with the strata or the building manager, and many stratas charge a move-in fee or take a refundable deposit. Get those details from your building before delivery day; we handle the elevator booking and the certificate of insurance once we have the contact.
- Houses on lanes are typical in Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, East Vancouver and the older parts of Burnaby: the garage or the rear entrance sits on a back lane the truck may not fit down. Tell us whether the main access is from the street or the lane.
- Permit parking covers much of the west side and downtown. Check with the City of Vancouver about a temporary parking reservation for a moving truck on your street.
- The North Shore is reached by the Lions Gate or Ironworkers Memorial bridge, both busy at peak hours. A mid-morning delivery avoids the worst of it.
What Changes When You Move from Ontario to British Columbia
An interprovincial move has no customs or inspections, but British Columbia does a few things differently from Ontario, and the deadlines start on the day you arrive.
- Driver’s licence: exchange your Ontario licence for a BC licence within 90 days of moving.
- Your vehicle: BC vehicle insurance is through ICBC, the public insurer. Register and insure the car in BC within 30 days of arriving; an Ontario policy does not carry over.
- Health coverage: apply for BC’s Medical Services Plan as soon as you arrive. There is a waiting period of the rest of the month you arrive plus two months. OHIP continues for the rest of the month you leave plus two more months, so the two line up if you apply on arrival.
- Taxes: BC charges a provincial sales tax plus GST instead of Ontario’s HST, and the province you live in on December 31 is the one you file provincial income tax for that year.
- Mail and records: set up Canada Post mail forwarding before pickup day and update the CRA, your bank and your employer with the Vancouver address.

Closing and possession dates rarely line up across the country. Storage in transit holds your shipment between pickup and delivery so there is still one load and one delivery. Tell us both dates when you book and we will quote the gap.
Can you deliver elsewhere in British Columbia?
Yes. Burnaby, Surrey, Richmond, the North Shore, Victoria, Kelowna and the rest of the province are quoted the same way, on the actual pickup and delivery addresses.
Is there customs or an inspection when moving between provinces?
