How a senior move works, step by step

A senior move is rarely just a move. It usually involves downsizing decades of belongings into a
much smaller space, often on a deadline set by a residence, and often with family members
coordinating from a distance. Here is how we run it.

1. Planning visit

We look at what is moving and what is not, and we work to the floor plan of the new suite rather
than guessing. Most retirement and assisted-living suites are considerably smaller than the home
being left, so knowing what actually fits comes first.

2. Sorting and downsizing

Items are grouped into what is moving, what is going to family, what is being donated and what is
being disposed of. This is the slowest part and it should not be rushed on moving day. See

3. Packing

Crews pack so that the first things needed at the other end are the first things opened.
Medication, daily essentials and a small set of familiar items travel separately, not buried in a
box.

4. Move day

Most residences have set move-in hours, a service elevator to book and a loading entrance to use.
We work to the residence’s rules and coordinate with their staff rather than turning up and asking.

5. Setting up the new suite

Furniture is placed and reassembled, beds are made up and the essentials are unpacked before the
crew leaves. Walking into a finished room rather than a stack of boxes matters more on this kind of
move than on any other.

Working with families

Adult children are often the ones organising a parent’s move, sometimes from another city. We are
used to that. One person can be the main contact for scheduling while the move itself is paced
around what the person moving is comfortable with. If several family members need to be kept
informed, tell us at booking who should be called about what.

Retirement residences and assisted living

Move-in days at retirement residences are usually scheduled by the residence, with a set window
and a booked elevator. Give us the residence’s move-in requirements when you book and we will work
to them. If the move-in date and the move-out date do not line up,

Planning a senior move: a practical checklist

The work that makes a senior move go well happens in the weeks before moving day, not on it.
This is the sequence we recommend to families.

Before you pack anything

• Get the floor plan of the new suite and measure what actually fits. This one step prevents most
  of the stress later, because it turns “what do we get rid of” into a concrete answer.
• Set the budget across all of it: the move, packing, storage, and any disposal or donation runs.
• Decide what is being kept, passed to family, donated or sold, and start early. Sorting decades
  of belongings is the slow part and it should never be rushed on moving day.
• Agree who in the family is the main contact for scheduling, so the mover is not getting three
  different sets of instructions.

Packing for a senior move

• Keep box weights low and use soft bags for clothes and linens. Lighter boxes mean fewer
  handling injuries for everyone involved.
• Label every box with both its contents and the room it belongs in at the new address.
• Pack an essentials bag that travels with the person, not on the truck: medications, glasses,
  hearing aid batteries, chargers, important documents and a few days of clothing.
• Keep jewellery, documents and anything irreplaceable in a personal bag under someone’s direct
  control.

On moving day

• Keep medications, glasses, documents and a snack within reach rather than packed.
• Build in rest. A move is physically and emotionally tiring, and there is no prize for finishing
  an hour earlier.
• Let the crew handle the heavy items and the furniture placement. That is what they are there
  for.
• Arrange care or safe transport for pets in advance.

Settling into the new home

• Arrange furniture so pathways stay clear, particularly for a walker or other mobility aid.
• Unpack the essentials first: bed made up, bathroom working, medications and daily items to
  hand.
• Put familiar things out early. Photographs and a favourite chair do more for how a new place
  feels than finishing the unpacking a day sooner.
